Getting Organized on Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend was quite eventful at the Tortolito household. While most of our friends spent the three-day weekend partying it up at Vegas or playing beach volleyball at Huntington Beach, we spent it the way any respectable old married couple would: organizing our closet.

That's right. We remodeled our closet and it feels so, so good! Neither the hubs or I have ever had a completely organized closet at any point in our lives. It's been a high-on-the-list, yet pain-in-the-ass task that has been pending for the past year and a half. Things got really bad after the wedding when we had boxes of wedding goods to store away. Since we live in a loft, the closet is one of two rooms that has a door that opens and closes. The other is the bathroom. So, our closet has been our quick storage solution since we moved here.

It wasn't a room that either of us were proud of, though. Yes, it's a walk in closet and is a pretty good size. We just weren't using the space wisely and, to be completely honest, were a bit lazy with it. We decided to take advantage of the three-day weekend to solve the closet problem. It really did take us 3 days to remodel it: emptying, cleaning, painting, cleaning again, shopping for components & building them, and reorganizing. The results were pretty drastic though! I'm completely embarrassed to post the "before" picture, but here it goes:




We got all of our new closet components from the Container Store. Our shoes finally have a home on their racks (instead of scattered throughout the floor), and the double rod provided a lot more hanging space. The sweet rug is from Anthropologie (love that store!) We're thinking of adding some kind of wall art to the wall that has the full-length mirror. But for now, we are enjoying the sense of relief that comes with having a closet that makes sense.
